CATCHMENT BOARD PROPOSALS
MORE VIGOROUS SCHEME TO BE PURSUED
The North Canterbury Labour Representation Committee has included six planks in its policy for the North Canterbury Catchment Board elections, it proposes to carry out a more vigorous scheme to prevent run-holders overstocking back country areas and t ausing erosion. All existing drains in the area will be kept clean, as far e.s possible by mechanical methods, and f ew wet areas will be drained to bring more land into production. Country subject to erosion will be * ejuvenated. afforestry work, particularly in back country areas will be intensified, and further appeals will be made to the public to create an intelligent interest in the activities of catchment board work.
Conditions will be made more attractive to users so that gravel supplies are all obtained from the beds of the Waimakariri and Ashley rivers, and not from excavations in the district. It is proposed to erect a shingle plant in the Waimakariri river bed.
