N.Z. MISSIONARY ACQUITTED
CHARGES OF BEATING NATIVE GIRLS
(Re?, 1 am.) SHABANI (Southern Rhodesia), Aug. 28. , Reginald Stephen Garfield Todd, a i New Zealander, was yesterday acquit- i ted on charges of beating native girls , at the Dadaya Mission, of which he is , superintendent. Todd told the Court I i that corporal punishment was better i j than expulsion for native girjs who | went on strike. None of the girls’ ,: parents had complained. Strikes at the mission school were growing. ( The Magistrate, Mr F. Roberts, said ’ that the beating with a sjambok was | justified. "The medical evidence does i, not show that the wounds are likely to I, be permanent,” he said. “Todd, from I the African point. of view, is looked upon as a father to these children while they are at school. I do not think the girls’ dresses should have • been lifted, but it would appear that no indignity was suffered. They do not view it in the same light as a European child would. The punishment t was not immoderate and the caning? were not unduly severe.”
