IMPORT CUTS IN AUSTRALIA
FORECAST OF 20 PER CENT. OFF TOBACCO (Rec 8 p.m.) CANBERRA. August 27. Though no final decision has ueen made, it was stated to-day at Canberra that the proposed cut in Australian tobacco imports to save dollars is 20 per cent. . „ Another contemplated cut is 25 per cent, on films. Complete details will not be decided until next Monday, according to the Minister oi Customs (Senator B. Courtice). He added that, in addition to tobacco, films, and newsprint many small items would be curtailed or even prohibited, but that he did not think any great hardship would be imposed. Sunny August in Britain.—The hours of sunshine recorded at the Kew Observatory since August 1 are greater than in any month since 1944 and any August since 1933. Many places in Britain had 200 hours’ sunshine in the last 18 days.—London. August 26.
