WINTER COMPETITION FINAL SOUTH BRIGHTON I BEATS WOOLSTON In the play-off for the Hawkins Shield at Wilding Park on Saturday afternoon, South Brighton I beat Woolston in a wellcontested match which was an excellent finale to the most interesting winter tennis competition for many, years. The two teams had met twice previously, South Brighton winning on both occasions, but Woolston offered very strong opposition on Saturday. The singles njatches on this occasion were shared, chiefly through the meritorious victory of N. S. H. McCann (Woolston) over A. T. Goddard, a Canterbury ranked player. South Brighton won both doubles, the top one by a very narrow margin. Results (South Brighton names first): — Singles.—R. A. H. Howe beat A. L. Blackwell, 6-0, 6-1; A. T. Goddard lost to N. S. H. McCann. 7-5, 6-8. 0-6; K. T. Hardie lost to D. McGhie, 6-8, 6-1, 3-6; B. H. Winchester beat J. Stewart, 6-1, 6-2.
