U.S. BROADCASTS CUT

“VOICE OF AMERICA”

RUSSIAN PROGRAMME TO BE EXPANDED

(Rec. 11.10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, July 29. The State Departmept’s “Voice of America” overseas broadcasts would be cut 40 per cent, because of the reduced Congressional appropriation, said the Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs (Mr William Benton) to-day.» Mr Benton disclosed that notwithstanding this overall cyt, the broadcasts to Russia would ‘be expanded. Beginning to-night, a new 30-minutes’ programme would be beamed to Russia, timed to reach Moscow at midnight. State Department officials said that the new broadcast resulted from recommendations made by the American Ambassador in Moscow (LieutenantGeneral W. Bedell Smith).

Apart from Russia, other foreign broadcasts will be reduced. The programmes for Holland, Denmark, and Sweden will be dropped altogether, but the broadcasts to Indonesia will be continued. z

Mr Benton said that various operations would be transferred to private broadcasting companies as rapidly as possible,. but the State Department would continue to direct programmes from New York for Russia, Rumania, Jugoslavia, Austria, Hungary, Poland, Greece, Korea, and China, and a short programme to Germany.
