NORTH AMERICAN WHEATCROP

U.S. Abandons Plan For Reduction

LOWER CANADIAN YIELD

(N.Z. Press' Association—Copyright), (Rec. 11 p.m.) WASHINGTON, July' 29 Because of the prospect of a continued world scarcity in food grains snd consequently of high prices, the United States Government decided today to abandon plans to reduce the whpat production goal for next year’s crop. Furthermore, the Canadian Wheat Board announced to-day that because of exceptionally unfavourable weather m the prairie provinces there would be a sharp decline in the Canadian wheat yield for 1947. The Canadian Wheat Board’s assist-ant-chief commissioner (Mr W. C. McNamara) said last night that the overall position for grain had deteriorated heavily in the last few months, and it now appeared that world conditions would be as serious during the new crop year as it had been since the end of the war, if not more serious.

The United States Department of Agriculture had planned to reduce the wheat acreage from 77.000,000 to 68,000,000, compared with the pre-war acreage of 50,000,000.
