ATTEMPT TO BURN POST OFFICE

DISCOVERY AT HOKITIKA The Hokitika Post Office, which the Government proposes to replace shortly. was threatened by fire during the week-end. Members of the post office staff discovered that a fire had been lit at the back of the building, where some of the weatherboards were charred. Chips of wood, which had apparently been gathered from a chopping block nearby, had been used to start the fire near the wall.

Investigations made by the Hokitika police are reported to have indicated that the flames were extinguished by water. No member of the post office staff, however, put the fire out. An attempt to burn down another old building in Hokitika—the town hall —was discovered early last month.
