WOMAN FOUND DEAD
SEVERE BURNS ON BODY
Yesterday morning an elderly woman was found dead in the kitchen of her home. She was:
Miss Maude Devereux-J ones, of 25 Cambridge terrace. Miss Devereux-Jones, who was aged about 70, was severely burned about the body and her night attire was burnt away. It is thought that she was preparing a cup of coffee the previous evening and her clothing caught alight, for a small pot of coffee was found on a gas ring, the gas jet being partly turned on. Both taps over a washtub were still turned on this morning, and the indications are that Miss Devereux-Jones tried to extinguish the flames at the tub. When Miss Matilda M. Thomas, the only other occupant of the house, went to the kitchen about 9 a.m. yesterday she found the door locked and could hear the sound of running water. The door has a snip catch on the inside. When she could not find Miss Deve-reux-Jones she got in touch with Mr J. Wyn Irwin, of 542 Hagley avenue, a brother-in-law of Miss DevereuxJones. He forced upon the door and found Miss Devereux-Jones lying dead on the floor. An inquest was opened for identification purposes last evening before the Coroner, Mr H. P. Lawry, and adjourned sine die. MINER INJURED BY FALL OF COAL Bruce Foster, single, aged 48, a miner, .of Bright street, Cobden, was admitted to the Grey Hospital yesterday afternoon with a dislocated hip and multiple abrasions received when he was caught by a fall of coal in the Liverpool State mine. His condition is reported to be satisfactory.
