BOARD REFUSES TO RESIGN

DEMAND FROM SECTION OF EMPLOYEES

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 29. On the grounds that it contained “objectionable language,” a letter from certain sections of the Auckland Power Board employees demanding the resignation of the whole board was not received when the board met in committee.

The letter protested against “conditions laid down for employment,” and followed an earlier letter in which a group of employees after a stop-work meeting referred to a questionnaire submitted by the board to prospective clerical employees aS “a most impudent and outrageous inquisition.” Replying to the earlier letter, the board pointed out that the wording of the questionnaire had been reconsidered on July 9 and a new form issued.

The board’s chairman (Mr S. I. Crookes) said: “It is ridiculous for 120 people at a stop-work meeting to demand the resignation of the chairman and a board which was elected by thousands of voters.” The executive of the Electrical Workers’ Union will consider the whole issue at a special meeting.
