BUTTER
Sir, —An article in “The Press” entitled “Markets for N.Z. Produce” dated Wellington, July 14, announced quantities of butter sold to .countries other than Britain. I am shocked to lead that butter has been sent Jo such countries as the Netherlands East Indies, etc., while we in New Zealand are still on a ration of 141 b a person a month. Here is a summary of butter sold overseas, other than to Britain:—Barbadoes 11 tons, Netherlands East Indies 89 tons, Iraq one ton, Jamaica 150 tons. While Britain was in need we endured shortages and rationing, but before butter is sent to foreign countries we in New Zealand are entitled to sufficient for our needs. If it is a matter of subsidy here and higher prices overseas, then remove the subsidy with restrictions. The people want more butter and are able to pay for it. —Yours, etc., R.A.B. July 23, 1947.
