ACCEPTANCE OF BRIBES
—♦— FORMER CONGRESSMAN SENTENCED (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m. WASHINGTON, July 21 Federal Judge Schweidhaut. in the District Court to-day, sentenced a former Congressman. Andrew May. to imprisonment for from eight months to two years on charges of accepting * 53.634 dollars in bribes while he was chairman of the military affairs committee of the House of Representatives during the war. The Court sentenced the munition manufacturers, Murray Garsson and Henry Garsson, to similar terms of imprisonment on charges of having paid bribes to May. May told the Judge: “I stand before the Court to-day with a clear conscience. I have never violated a law t in the 72 years of my- life. I havt never received a dollar which was not honestly earned or justly due.”
