CHRISTIAN SCIENCE BOOK

PRESENTATION TO ALEXANDER TURNBULL LIBRARY A religious book of unusual interest, a copy of the subscription edition of “Science and Health,” by Mrs Mary Baker Eddy, founder of Christian Science, will be presented by Christian Science Churches of New Zealand to the Alexander Turnbull Library at a special function in Wellington on Thursday. The edition, which has been described by authorities as a masterpiece of typographical art, was printed under great difficulties in Boston during the war. Special printers were taken to Boston from Italy and special paper was secured from the Kentish paper mills. The type for the edition was specially cut by William Dana Orcutt, a world authority on typographical art. In all 1026 copies were printed, 26 of which were distributed to various famous libraries of the world. The other 1000 were, sold at £5O a copy. The Christian Science Churches of New Zealand bought one, which will be presented to the Alexander Turnbull Library. As far as is known there are few copies of the edition in New Zealand, but of those that are in this country the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Christchurch, has a copy.
