NEW CATHEDRAL FOR COVENTRY

HARLECH REPORT APPROVED LONDON, July 20. The Coventry Diocesan Conference has unanimously approved the report of the Harlech Commission recommending that the cathedral should be built on the same spot as the old cathedral, and that it should be in the IJnglish Gothic tradition. The conference recommended all authorities concerned to accept the report. Lord Harlech told the conference that the commission ‘ recommended

English Gothic architecture because the Royal Fine Arts Commission was unlikely to approve any plan which meant using a modern design and material on the old cathedral’s site. The commission recommended that there should be an open architectural competition for the new building.
