MAGISTRATE’S COURT
(Before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.) REMANDED ON THEFT CHARGES Douglas Stewart McGregor, a boat builder, aged 21 (Mr E. M. Hay) was remanded until July 31 on a charge of stealing on May 21 a motor-cycle, valued at £9O. the property of Victor John Jesson. Bail was allowed at £l5O, with one surety of £l5O, or two of £75, McGregor to report daily to the police. On charges of stealing on July 6 a car battery, a car pump, and a car jack, of a total value of £4 10s, the property of Jules George Raman, and on January 9 a bicycle valued at £5, the property of some person unknown, Noel David Thompson, a radio mechanic, aged 24 (Mr J. K. Moloney) was remanded for one week for a report from the Probation Officer (Mr W. H. Darby). Detective-Sergeant A. A. Herron said that the accused had removed the tools from the complainant’s garage a few doors away from Thompson's home. Accused said that the bicycle which had been found in his possession was found in the street six months previously. Mr Moloney said that when Thompson had come out of the Army his sheet was marked lower-grade mentality. Accused was more or less unemployable in the general sense of the word, Mr Moloney said. Bail was allowed in Thompson’s own recognisance at £5O, on the condition that he report daily to the police. NAME SUPPRESSED A man. whose name was ordered to be suppressed, was placed on probation for two years on a charge of stealing books of a total value of £l5 ss. BREACH OF PROBATION ORDER Basil Joseph Foley, a labourer, aged 22. was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment with hard labour on a charge that, being a person convicted at Wellington on March 3, and released on probation . on the statutory conditions and on the special condition that he pay damages amounting to £9 10s, he committed a breach of his probation by failing to report to the probation officer as directed. Mr Darby said that Foley had been released in Wellington on a charge of mischief. The offence involved assault on a man. Accused had not proved a satisfactory probationer. Mr D. J. Hewitt said that Foley had not realised the necessity for reporting regularly to the police, but he was prepared to make amends. REMANDED Desmond Patrick Egan, art dyer and porter, aged 23, was remanded until July 28 on a charge of receiving stolen property. knowing it to have been dishonestly obtained. Bail was allowed at £lOO with one surety of £lOO. the accused to report daily to the police. THEFT Robert Patrick Bennetts, alias Bennett, aged 24, a labourer, of Christchurch, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour on each of three charges of theft, the sentences to be concurrent with each other and concurrent with a sentence he is at present serving. Bennetts, who was represented by Mr R. Twyneham, pleaded guilty to stealing a wallet, and its contents of a total value of £7 0s 6d, to stealing a purse and its contents of a total value of £7 15s, and to stealing a purse and its contents of a total value of £l2 Bs.
