MIGRATION TO AUCKLAND

SCOTTISH FAMILY’S JOURNEY

(Rec. 10 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 18. The first instalment of the Stoddart family, which is migrating by air from Scotland to New Zealand, left New York for San Francisco yesterday. This is the second leg of their 12,000mile migration from Glasgow to Auckland. , __ A party comprising Mr and Mrs James B. Stoddart and their children, Gwendolyn aged 14, Thomas aged 13, and Hilary aged eight, arrived at La Guardia field on Wednesday. Another party—the second and final instalment —will reach New York on July 24. They will all meet at San Francisco on July 25 before their Pacific flight. The second party, numbering nine, will include two octogenarians, one of whom is Mr Stoddart’s mother, aged 84. Mr Stoddart, who is a mattress manufacturer, is aged 45. Tales of New Zealand which Mr Stoddart heard in the First World War impressed him so much that two weeks ago he decided to take his family there. When he announced the decision at a family gathering, his sister, mother and relations by marriage decided to go too. Several days later a friend and his family joined the group.
