CARDINAL GRIFFIN’S ADDRESS
Sir. —It is clear that soon there will be only two classes of people in the world (according to the church) —Communists and Catholics, and many who do not destroy God’s word, will be called Communists who have nothing, in common with Communism, simply because they criticise the church. Such is the sum total of “Catholics” somewhat abusive letter. Had the Church opposed Fascist Mussolini instead of calling him a “man sent by Providence it would have acted in Italy’s best interests; but no, in many countries it did nothing to stem the rise of Fascism. proved enemy of the workers. Archbishop Stepinac was tried by Catholic peers; and it will take a good deal of explaining to disprove the charges laid against him. and all enemy collaborators also. Would the writers like to see the flower of our manhood again destroyed in a war against Russia?—Yours, etc., CATHOLIC OBSERVER. July 18, 1947. _ Sir, —Your correspondent, “A Catholic Observer” obviously omitted to add to his or her non de plume the small word “anti.” Your correspondent shows surprising ignorance concerning the absence of truth or justice in the trial of Archbishop Stepinac—a man known to be one of Jugoslavia’s great patriots and a soldier in World War 1. Because of the example of his holy life and great courage in defending his priests and co-religionists against a cruel, godless regime, Tito decided to get rid of him. Evidently Russia and her policies are approved of by your correspondent.—Yours, etc., ANOTHER CATHOLIC OBSERVER. July 18, 1947. [“A Catholic Observer,” may, if he wishes, briefly reply; otherwise, this correspondence is closed. —Ed., “The Press.”J
