PRISONERS ESCAPE FROM GAOL
PHILIPPINE GOVERNOR CAPTURED
(Rec. 7 p.m.) MANILA, July 2. According to officials of the Philippine Government, 45 prisoners who escaped from the gaol on Mindoro, a small island south of Luzon, seized the Governor of the province (Mr Conrado Morente), and attempted to steal an aeroplane at the Calapan airport. The prisoners still control the town of Calapan, although they were driven from the airport. Besides the Governor, the prisoners captured the Mayor (Mr Filomeno Sumaco) and Calapan’s chief of police. The prisoners’ leader was killed in a 40-mmute fight with military police. He was reported to be a former military police officer, Lieutenant Romero, who was serving a sentence of 16 years’ gaol for a capital offence. Fire in London G.P.O.— Fire destroyed the whole of the top floor of the central telegraph office of the General Post Office in London. The floor was destroyed by fire bombs in 1940, and was being rebuilt. Water from fire-hoses damaged the lower floors.—London, July 3.
