OPENING OF LAKE FORSYTH

Sir, —Your report on the opening of Lake Forsyth would almost lead one to believe that this was the first time it had been opened successfully and that the project was something of an engineering feat. The Wairewa County Council has opened it successfully with horse scoops for some 40 years Evidently Mr Harris was misinformed about its being the first opening made in one day. as this has been accomplished several times, one o; these occasions being in May. 1934. with horse scoops, with a boisterous southerly making conditions as trying as is possible to imagine. Usually the opening will scour up to three chains in width with the flow of water through the loose shingle. With modern machinery and favourable conditions the opening of the lake is a comparatively easy job, but with exceptionally high seas even bulldozers could not work on the shingle bank.—Yours, etc., OLD SCOOP. July 2. 1947.
