CHANGE OF MILK VENDORS

ACTION GENERAL BY CONSUMERS

Definite advice that milk vendors yesterday began deliveries in the zones proposed was received by the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews). “The independent vendors are delivering in all parts of the town and the ‘pasteurised kings’ are getting it ih the neck,” said Mr W. H. Davies, of the Independent Milk Vendors’ Association, last evening, when he confirmed the reports to the Mayor. In one block in Peterborough street, 31 customers changed to a new vendor, reported Cr. R. G. Brown. He added that reports of change-overs from old suppliers were general, indicating that the people desired a choice of vendors. The Deputy-Mayor (Cr. M. E. Lydns) further reported that in one locality 20 consumers had made a change,. Vendors all over the city were now entering new areas and he, personally, proposed serving the area he served before zoning was first introduced, said Mr Davies. One development was that the Canterbury' Dairy Farmers’ Association would not give vendors who draw supplies from it more milk than they had under their quota as on Monday, but the independent vendors had their own supply and would serve as many new customers as they could. For one. he did not propose going beyond the boundaries Of the district he served before zoning. “Those who turned down the zoning have themselves to blame if other vendors ‘go mad’ over all parts of the city,” said Mr Davies. “Our association is going to stand by the Mayor. We are going to take on new customers and go where we like, more or less. The Milk Board is practically finished. Cr. Lyons says he wants to see zoning abolished and then that he wants to see zoning. Not a milk vendor nor shop in which milk is sold has had a licence for two years If I can sell milk without a licence for two years, when licences Jiave been required, I think I can sell for 20 years without one. Licences are due in March of each year. We tendered cur fee i n March, 1946, and it was March*” 3nd U WBS refused ** ain last
