MEN’S SHIRTS
Sir, —The comment by the president of the Retailers’ Association on a letter in this morning’s issue of “The Press” is a masterpiece of evasion. All he said does not alter the fact that if a retailer bought a shirt before the war for 5s and sold it for 7s 6d, he made 50 per cent, profit. If he now buys it for 20s and sells it for 30s, he still makes 50 per cent, profit, the same ratio, but 7s 6d more on one garment. The manager of a large retail firm told me this a few weeks ago. He said the women could force prices down by - reiusing to buy.—Yours, etc., WAITING FOR SHIRTS. July 1, 1947. [The president of the Retailers’ Association (Mr W. J. Donnelly) said that he had no comment to make on the letter.]
