EXPORT CHEESE
HARBOUR BOARD CUP PRESENTED
The high standard of dairy produce from Banks Peninsula factories was commented on by several speakers yesterday, when the challenge cup awarded for the best export cheese of the season was presented to the Barry’s Bay Co-operative Dairy Company. Ltd., by the Lyttelton Harbour Board. Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon chairman of the board, said the board had inaugurated the competition in 1930 to encourage the highest quality in cheese exported through the stores at Lyttelton. The winning company had been awarded 92.75 points, but all the factories had a high standard, and the lowest on the list scored 92.174 points Representatives of the dairy industry would be pleased to learn that the board was considering tenders for the supply and installation of new refrigerating machinery at the cool stores Mr Mac Gibbon said. The total capacity of the cheese room was approximately 14,000 crates, and the total handled for the season was approximately 14,800, an increase of 1800 on last season.
There was a great demand for dairy produce to-day, but it might not .continue, said Mr J. B. Sawers, supervising grader for the South Island. If there was more competition any efforts made to produce and manufacture high-quality produce would be more apparent.
