OPPOSITION’S ROLE IN HOUSE
INTENTION TO INTRODUCE SOME BILLS <?£•> WELLINGTON, July 2. The Opposition’s role in the House of Representatives was discussed by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G. Holland) in the House this evening. I He said it would not be merely ob- • structionist but would support good • legislation whatever its origin, would effect improvements by amendment where possible, would oppose bad legislation, and, within the limited scope possible, would introduce its own bills. Although some of his friends said “Be tough with them, give them the works” and although he knew what tactics Labour would employ in opposition, he believed something better’ was expected of an Opposition than mere toughness. As an example of the new bills the Opposition intended to introduce, Mr Holland said there would be one which would give effect to the suggestion of Mr A. C. Baxter (Government, Raglan) that a Maori electoral roll should be established. Would Mr Baxter vote with the Opposition on that? x
