TENNIS TOURNEY AT WIMBLEDON

AMERICAN WOMEN’S SUCCESSES . . LONDON. July 1. As in the men’s singles, American women have demonstrated their superiority at the Wimbledon tennis tourney. Three American girls and on# South African will contest the semifinals of the women’s singles championship.

A victory for Miss Brough over Mrs Bolton in the quarter-finals to-day has put Australia out of the women’s singles. Mrs Summers (South Africa), who* was seeded seventh, beat another American, Mrs Todd, who was seeded fourth. Miss Osborne, the No. 1 seeded player, eliminated the last British player, Mrs Menzies. In the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles, the Australians. Long and Geoff Browne, and the South Africans, Fannin and Sturgess. had a great match. There was spectacular net play which drew rpunds of applause. The Australians’ stronger service was the deciding factor. In another quarter-final game the superb combination of the Australians, Bromwich and Pails, was too mu'ch for the Frenchmen Petra and Pellizaa. Results wepe as follows: Women’s Singles Quarter-finals —Miss Otiborne beat Mrs Menzies. 6-2, 6-4; Miss Brough beat Mrs Bolton. 6-2, 6-3; Miss Hart beat Mrs Bostock, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2; Mra Summers beat Mrs Todd, 7-5, 6-4. Men’s Doubles Third Round—Barton and Paish beat Ellmer and Spitzer, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Quarter-finals —Kramer and Falkenburg beat Barton and Paish, 6-2. 6-4, 6-4; Long and Brown beat Fannin and Sturgess, 9-7, 5-7, 6-4,6-3; Mottram and Sidwell beat Mehta and Misra, 9-7, 6-4. 6-4; Bromwich and Pails beat Petra and Pellizza, 6-4, 11-9, 6-4. Women’s Doubles Third Round—Mrs Bolton and Mrs Hopman beat Miss De Borman and Mra Meulemeester, 6-2, 6-0; Mrs Ellis and Miss Jedrzejowska beat Mrs GloVer and Mrs Vivian, 9-7, 3-6. 6-2; Mrs Muller and Mrs Summers beat Miss Dace and Mrs Hamilton, 8-6, 6-3; Miss Hart and Mrs Todd beat Miss Gannon and Miss Quertier, 6-3, 6-4; Mrs Blair and Mrs Menzies beat Mrs Dawson Scott and Mrs Halford. 6-4. 7-5. Mixed Doubles Third Round —Fannin and Mrs Muller beat Leyland and Mrs Walker Smith, 6-1, 8-6; Asboth and Mist Kormoczy beat Roberts and Miss Curry, 6-0, 6-0: Bold and Mrs Coutts beat Baxter and Mrs Osborne, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2; Drobny and Mrs Mathieu beat Butler and Mrs Carris, 6-3, 6-4; McKenzie and Mrs King beat Cernik and Miss Straubeova, 6-4, 6-4.
