The Burmese Constituent Assembly unanimously adopted Mr Aung San’s resolution that Burma’s future constitution should be that of an independent sovereign republic, known as the Union of Burma. Mr Aung San declared: “We must get independence within one year.” He added that a sub-committee would examine the draft constitution and make a report, which would be circulated among members before the Assembly’s next session, which is expected to commence on July 7. Reuters says that Mr Thakin Nu, the president of the Constituent Assembly, will head a delegation which will leave for London this week to discuss with the British Government political developments in Burma since the agreement last January to grant Burma independence.
