TEMUKA P.W.D. WORKSHOPS
Sir, —From what I hear, the employees of the Public Works Department workshops at Temuka would very much like to know when they are moving to Christchurch. The new workshops at Sockburn are nearing completion, and from information I receive, which is very reliable, a certain number of employees have been offered a transfer to Christchurch, with accommodation provided; but the burning question is: when do they go? Some of these men own their own homes and have chances to sell, but are held up until they know when they can move out. Why don’t the supposed big chiefs in Christchurch depart from the usual routine of blueprint gazing, and get down to plain facts, and advise these men when they are to be transferred? Surely there must be someone with the authority and knowledge to give this muchneeded information, if not in Christchurch, perhaps in Wellington.—Yours, etc., LOOKING ON. June 9, 1947, [The acting district engineer (Mr E. F. Evans) commented: "The fcmall group of men already transferred from Temuka is working on the installation of equipment in the new building; but because of shortages of equipment it is, at the moment, impossible to predict when the new workshops will he ready for operation. The men in Temuka have been promised ample notice before their proposed transfer to Christchurch, and tkey would be unwise to consider selling their homes until they receive instructions to shift.”]
