TAXI SHORTAGE ?
Sir,—Reasons given by the taxi firms for the delay in clearing the railway station on April 24 were the rain, late shopping night conditions, and the unpunctuality of trains. On Wednesday, May 21, the Dunedin train arrived absolutely on time. The day was fine. Of the five taxis waiting, two had been booked. As they left a few others arrived. When we secured the tenth, to take us to Shirley, tnere were about 100 persons waiting; and the West Coast train was due. Two persons with a child begged our driver to take them to St. Albans. Immediately an inspector. fulfilling his duty, came forward and made them leave the taxi. The following Saturday morning, in the Square I watched an official direct persons not of one party to share taxis for the races. Surely sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.—Yours, etc., READY TO SHARE. June 10, 1947. [“lt has always been the practice to permit separate fares to the racecourses in the vicinity of the city, the separate fares being prescribed by the licensing authority,” said Mr H. S. Feast (secretary of the Christchurch Metropolitan Licensing Committee). “In such cases, intending hirers are aware before entering the vehicle that they will not have the exclusive right to the vehicle. For other hirings, however, the hirer has the option of saying whether he will snare the vehicle with other passengers. Not all such hirers are as' ready as the correspondent to share the vehicle • with other passengers.”]
