WORK AT MARAETAI NOT HELD UP
UNION’S REPLY TO MR SEMPLE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 10 An emphatic denial that the dispute with William Cable and Company had held up State hydro-electric -work at Maraetai was made by the secretary of the Wellington Engineers’ Union (Mr C. G. Caswell) last night. Mr Caswell said that contrary to a statement made by the Minister of Works (Mr R. Semple), work had not stopped on the transmission towers being made at Gracefield. The union had, in fact, sent men out there to prepare the shop for making the towers. These men were instructed to continue working, as the Wanganella dispute could be settled in Cable’s shop at Kaiwarra without in any way affecting the State enterprise. Mr Caswell said he had received a letter from the men working on the Maraetai job telling him there had been no shortage of the steel used in tunnelling, to which Mr Semple had referred.
