ST. MARTINS PARK
Sir,—l was surprised to read in your paper of June 7 of the City Council's intention to take over property in St. Martins to form a park. Playing fields are very necessary in built-up areas, but it would appear that St. Martins is well provided for in this respect with Waltham Park. Beckenham Park, Risingholme community centre, and St. Martins reserve, all in the immediate vicinity. To the council I say, would it not be better to utilise the money intended for the park to form a road and subdivide the land for building sections? Would not the people of St. Martins who signed the petition for the confiscation of the prouerty for a park feel happier in the thought that their district was assisting in a practical fashion to relieve the acute shortage of building sections, by p e'er' ing to see this area used for this purpose?—Yours, etc., RETURNED SERVICEMAN. June 10. 1947.
