VICTORIA LEAGUE
NEWS FOR WOMEN
HELP FOR BRITAIN The commiftee of the Canterbury branch of the Victoria League, at its meeting yesterday, decided to send a donation of £5 sterling to Queen Charlotte’s Maternity Hospital in London and £5O worth of food to headquarters in London for distribution. It was reported that five cases of clothing had been sent overseas recently, and letters of thanks for gifts from the league and the Young Contingent were received from the matron of the Great Ormond Street Hospital. The Auckland branch of the league advised that it was proposed to hold a Dominion conference in Auckland in November—the first for eight years. It was decided to support the proposal and, if possible, to send representatives, but to suggest that the conference be held in October, instead of November. For the Young Contingent, Mrs T. L. Fancourt reported that the membership now stood at 234, and that the monthly luncheon meetings were well attended. She said that the committee had evolved a scheme by which members helped other members who had young children by taking charge of the house and children while the mother went out occasionally. The major effort of members to raise money for sending food overseas would, this year, probably be held in November, instead of August as formerly. Reporting on the ever-increasing demand for “links” or pen-friends overseas, Miss M. A. Ray said that during the last two months 306 links had been established—in Canada, Britain, Australia, Penang, and India. She had, she said, received the names of 31 boys at‘ one college in Lahore, India, who were keen to have correspondents in New Zealand. It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mrs Innes, Caledonian road, in the death of her husband. Mrs Innes, who is more than 80 years old, is an excellent worker for the league, and sends in beautifully made clothes for children. The president (Mrs J. Mowbray Tripp) presided at the meeting.
