South Africa made 533 in its first innings, and England has made 154 for two wickets. a . With the total at 493, South Africa beat its previous highest score in England, which was eight wickets for 492 at the Oval in 1929. Harris to-day played a grand innings for the visitors, hitting nine fours in his score of 60. The last five South African wickets fell for 49 runs Hutton and Washbrook opened confidently for England, but when the total was in the forties both were out. Edrich and Compton then began the task of recovering England’s position. They batted with confidence, but also with care. Compton, in one over from Tuckett, hit three boundaries At stumps thev had added 106 in an unfinished partnership.
