APPEAL MADE TO BUSINESSMEN

WARNING ON “BEATING POWER CUTS” “I have been disgusted to learn that there are some business people in Christchurch who are out to beat the power cuts,” said Mr D. V. Wilson, a former president of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, at a meeting of the Christchurch Businessmen’s Club yesterday, when he appealed to members for the utmost co-operation in conserving electricity. Mr Wilson said ne had been a member of a deputation of manufacturers who had discussed the power situation with the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews). It was no exaggeration to say that the community was verging on a calamity, for the position was dangerpus, and everyone knew what a total breakdown in supplies would mean. People had a temptation to offset losses in production caused by the compulsory cuts by increased activities at other times. It was a miserable attitude to try to beat the power cuts. The next week or 10 days would be an extremely critical period added Mr Wilson, and everything possible should be done by all members of the comgjnunity to save power.
