NATIVE WORKERS IN GOLD MINES

MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS IN SOUTH AFRICA ** The Press “ Special Service AUCKLAND. June 9. A medical officer with the Chamber of Mines at Johannesburg, Dr. J. L. Lawrie, arrived at Auckland from Cape Town in the motor-ship Tuscan Star to-day on a holiday visit to New Zealand.

Dr. Lawrie said the medical examination of natives for all gold mines on the Witwatersrand was undertaken by the chamber, and the service, which included provision for one doctor to about 6000 natives, probably gave them better medical attention than that received by any other class of workers in the world. The use of miniature radiography in chest examinations was a feature of the medical work, said Dr. Lawrie. A large number of workers could be handled by this method, which had been pioneered by a member of the chamber’s staff. Captain K. F. G. Collender. The results were examined under a magnifying glass, and any cases which required checking received a normal Xray examination.
