COST OF LIVING
Sir, —On Saturday you reported Mr A. H. Nordmeyer as saying, in an address to the Federation of Labour, that the cost of living had risen by only 14 per cent, between 1927 and 1947. Surely Mr Nordmeyer is not serious. Or perhaps he does not pay taxes, or rent a house, or buy food, or drink at all, or wear any clothes, or ever take a holiday, or have any furniture in his home, or hope to buy a motor-car. If he does go in for these sorts of things, and can get as far now on £ll4 as he could in 4927 on £lOO, he is indeed a remarkable financier. He could teach us a lot. So let him give us all the details. We, too, would be glad to live on his system, and pay only 14 per cent, more for our goods and services than we did in 1927.—Yours, INTRIGUED. June 9, 1947.
