HIGH HEELS CAUSE DEFORMITIES
NEW& FOR WOMEN
STILL ESSENTIAL TO FASHION High .heels cause women 10 times more foot deformities than men suffer, according to Dr. Dudley J. Morton, a. United States expert on foot troubles. High heels belong, to the same category as the old-fashioned wasp waist, he says, and beauty to-day depends no more on the spike heel that it did years ago on the wasp waist. He says that many ailments are caused by crowding the feet into pointed shoes. However, the cure does not lie in mass-produced “corrective” shoes, he says. Buying such shoes is similar to buying spectacles at a bargain counter. In spite of Dr. Morton’s warning of the deformities caused by wearing high-heeled shoes, the fashion director of the United States National Shoe Manufacturers’ Association (Mrs F. Maher) predicts no lowering of heels. “The new season will bring heels higher than ever before,” she says. “Skirts are coming down —heels must go up. Women are not going to give uo high heels. They are flattering.” Platform shoes can help the small woman to appear taller, according to Mrs Maher, but as a fashion feature they are decreasing in importance.
