After losing another stroke on his overnight deficit of three. the titleholder. H. Pickworth (Victoria) turned on brilliant golf at the last 18 holes todav to retain the Australian open championship by five strokes from Thursday s sensational record breaker, Billy McWilliam (Sydney). Only Pickworth and McWilliam remained at the forefront of the field when to-day”s. play began. McWilliam's three advantage became four at the end of the first 18 holes, when he carded a steady 73 to Pickworth’s 74. He later played excellent golf for a final score of 69 against McWilliam s 78. Another highlight of the closing play was a magnificent 69 by K. Enderby (New South Wales), who finished third in the open field and headed the amateurs. Leading scores were: H. SPALDING TOURNEY WIN FOR HENRY COTTON LONDON, June 6. Henry Cotton won the Spalding golf tournament at St. Andrews with an aggregate for 72 holes o£ 288. The final two rounds were played today in miserable weather, rain enveloping the course, but Cotton was always steady, and at times brilliant. The Australian, Von Nida, was penalised two strokes in the third round for moving a post used to keep the crowd back in check while he played a shot. Von Nida was angry about this penalty. He said if he had been penalised orie stroke instead of two he would have shared second place with Dai Rees at 293, and the extra penalty meant the loss of £lOO to him in prize money.
