SHIFT PAYMENT ARGUMENT
TRAMWAY PARTIES CONFER Ari anomaly in payment for night workers in pits at the car sheds was adjusted between the Christchurch Tremway Board and the Tramway Workers’ Union at a conference yesterday. It was agreed that the major question of a claim of 2s fid a shift for all night workers be deferred until the Conciliation Council meets on May 26. ’ A joint statement issued by the bosrd and the union read:— “Both parties agreed that no claim had been made for the payment of 2s 6d shift money for night workers. “The union, however, pointed out that an anomaly existed regarding the payment of pit money, ’and the bocfd agreed that night workers working in pits should be paid pit money at the same rate as day v\ orkers. for by doing so the differential rate for night work would be preserved. “The question of the rates of pay for night workers will be discussed when both parties meet in conciliation to negotiate the Dominion award at Wellington on May 26. 1947.” The conference, which was held in committee, lasted a little more than one hour.
