UNIONS OPPOSE ROCKET TESTS

AUSTRALIAN RANGE

MOVE TO DECLARE WORK “ BLACK ” (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) MELBOURNE. May 10. Building work on the Australian rocket range at Mount Ebo may Soon be declared “black” by building trade unions. The Building Trades Federation has decided to recommend to all affiliated unions that all work associated with the range tests be declared black. If the recommendation is adopted, as is expected, no union members will accept employment in building work associated with the tests.

The secretary of the federation (Mr D. Thompson) said the action had been recommended because the Unions did not think Australia should be used as a base for future Wars. Materials used in tests would be better employed in building workers’ homes. The millions of pounds proposed to be spent on the tests, he i said, should be used in housing, and in the development of Australia.
