GOOD PERFORMANCE BY PANDEMONIUM

OUT OF HACK COMPANY WINNING £llB5 The game and consistent Pandemonium scored a decisive win in the Chatmos Hack Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday, and has now won her way out of hack company. Pandemonium has had a busy but a successful season, having had 17 races for three firsts, four seconds, three thirds, and seven unplaced starts and £llO5 of the £llB5 she has won to date has been won this season. For her size Pandemonium carries weight extraordinarily well, and there is no horse more honest in a race. She was a firm favourite on Saturday, and although she was still third last with five furlongs to run, had made up all her ground and had the race won a furlong from the post. The runner-up, Responsive, made a good showing and held off a strong challenge by Early Night over the last furlong by a head. When the field settled down, Hansel, Gallimaufry,-and Turf Topip were showing out from Stabilisation and Wandering Minstrel, but Hansel soon dropped back and with a mile to run Gallimaufry, Turf Topic, and Liquidate led by two lengths from Hansel, followed by Stabilisation, Early Night, Responsive, Wandering Minstrel, Old Faithful, Lady Welbeck, Pandemonium, Mercia’s Mystery, and Little Billy. There was little change until the five furlongs, where Gallimaufry dropped back to fourth place and Old Faithful moved up into third place with Lady Welbeck and Pandemonium starting to improve their positions. Responsive and Early Night followed the three leaders round to the straight entrance, and fiioved through to take the lead soon after the field straightened up, but Pandemonium challenged strongly on the outer and took the lead with a furlong to run and carried on to win by three lengths. There was a good race for the minor placings. Responsive holding off Early Night by a head, with a similar margin to Stabilisation, which came with a good late run. Then came Mercia’s Mystery, Hansel, and Wandering Minstrel.

Battle Chief Stayed Too Well Battle Chief outstayed his five opponents in a fast-run race in the Winchmore Hurdles, winning easily from the favourite, Big Top. From a rear position at the seven furlongs, where he was giving the leader at least 12 lengths. Big Top was rushed up to take the lead at the four furlongs, even though he made a poor jump at the hurdle near the six furlongs. Round the home turn his rider endeavoured to put a break on the others, but he ran out at the last hurdle and was an easy prey to Battle Chief In the run home. Dinky Di, Grand Forest, and The Crofter set a strong pace from the outset, and passing the stands had a lead of 12 lengths on Big Top and Battle Chief, with Roman Son tailing off. Down the back The Crofter dropped in behind Dinky Di and Grand Forest, with Big Top and Battle Chief starting to improve their positions from the seven furlongs. Big Top reached the front with four furlongs to run, with Battle Chief following a few lengths behind alongside Grand Forest, with two lengths to Dinky Di and The Crofter. Bip Top, which had jumped patchily, ran out at the last hurdle and Grand Forest fell. Battle Chief soon reaching the front to win comfortably by three lengths. Another six lengths back Dinky Di just held off The Crofter for third place by half a head. After his performance the previous week it was not intended to run Battle Chief on Saturday, and it was only decided to accept for him less than half an hour before the acceptances closed. • Citril Wins Easily The very promising two-year-old filly, Citril, scored an easy win in the Lagmhor Stakes, leading practically throughout to finish three lengths clear of Banshee. Lakhnau and Saigon were slow away, Citril, Banshee, Ned Kelly. and Sorry being smartest out with Citril quickly working clear of Banshee and Ned Kelly, with Cobbler’s Song, Sorry, Ballochbuie, Jolyon, and Gold Medallion next. Citril was always galloping freely and the pace she set had the field well strung out as they turned 4nto the straight, where Ned Kelly, Banshee, Ballochbuie, and Sorry were her nearest attendants. Banshee could not close the gap to Citril, and the latter was not pressed to win by three lengths, with Ballochbuie running on in third place, another four lengths backs. Sorry and Ned Kelly were next, clear of Gold Medallion, with Wild Knock, Jolyon, and Renege following. A sister to Derene, Citril is an outstanding type of filly, and particularly well grown. Next season she will be good class. Although only second favourite on the win machine, Citril was such a short priced favourite on the place machine that her supporters lost money on their investments. Night Blush Again Night Blush made the first day’s maiden form look good when she won the Fairfield Hack Handicap decisively from Eudora and an outside fancy in Royal Flash. Night Blush reached the front inside the first furlong, and though joined by Lalla Meer at the four furlongs, s6on worked clear in the straight. Eudora finished strongly to take second place from Royal Flash, which was never further back than third. Penetrate and Lady Coolbane were slow to move, Prana, Royal Flash, and Night Blush being first out from Mestiza, Eudora, and Lalla Meer. Night Blush was soon clear of Royal Flash and Mestiza, but with three furlongs covered Lalla Meer joined her in the lead, and the pair Ted round to the straight from Royal Flash, Peculate, Mestiza, Eudora, Great Chum, and Prana. Lalla Meer was beaten as they straightened up, and with a furlong to run Royal Flash, Peculate, Mestiza, and Great Chum were not making any impression on Night Blush, which carried on to win by a length from Eudora, which finished on strongly wide out to beat Royal Flash by a neck. Great Chum was fourth, half a length back; then came Prana, Mestiza, Peculate, and Sword Dancer. The winner finished on well enough to suggest that an additional furloijg will not trouble
