RELATING THE NORTH RAILWAY LINE.—The relaying of 25 chains of line between Bryndwr and Papanui was undertaken by the Railway Department yesterday. Work on the line on week-days is impracticable, as the gangs can never have a clear hour’s work between the passage of trains. The upper photograph shows a large mobile crane being used to lay the new rails. The crane travels on the new line and moves forward as each section is laid. In the lower picture a grader, drawn by a tractor, is seen at work. The new rails are on the left and the torn-up old rails on the right. The track renewed is portion of a stretch of three miles, between Bryndwr and Styx, which has had to be relaid.
