WORK ON STATE HIGHWAYS

TRANSFER TO COUNTIES SUGGESTED Contending that local bodies could attend to highways more economically than the State, Mr A. E. Hunt (Waipara) asked the Ward 11 counties (North Canterbury) of the New Zealand Counties’ Association to recommit a remit urging that counties should take over State highways in their area with a full subsidy. After the last Dominion conference the matter was referred to Government authorities for comment, he said. There was considerable waste of time and money on State highways because of the large areas requiring attention. said Mr Hunt Slips and repairs could receive prompt attention by county equipment in the area. ‘There was a tremendous amount of travelling for State road employees. He thought counties could do the job at half the cost. When Mr J. K. McAlpine, M.P. (Tawera), asked about the smaller counties with slender resources but with long strips of highways, Mr J. Manson (Amuri) said the proposal was only for councils who could do the job more cheaply than the State. Mr F. W. Freeman (Heathcote) said he saw many disadvantages in broken systems of road treatment and differing standards. The motion was carried, through many delegates from the 20 counties represented did not vote.
