PERSISTENT LUCERNE
A three-year-old paddock of grass and clover on light land near the Hurunui river gives a good demonstration of the ability of lucerne to persist under conditions that would discourage most other .valuable plants The paddock was sown down to pasture with oats after a tallow following two crops of wheat. The first crop of wheat went in after the paddock had been down to lucerne for about 20 years. The paddock to-day is well filled with lucerne, although it has been grazed hard, and has had a seed crop taken off it. • The lucerne undoubtedly had a great deal to do with the ability of the paddock to stand two successive wheat crops and give reasonable returns.
