PETROL IMPORTS
HEAVY INCREASE SHOWN LAST YEAR
(P.A.) MASTERTON. May 9. Heavy increases in the importation of petrol into New Zealand were revealed in figures released yesterday l?y the chairman (Mr T. A. Johnston) at a meeting in Masterton of No. 10 District Highways Council. The facts disclosed, contrary to some published statements, that petrol consumption had shown little change when rationing ended, Mr Johnston said The position would obviously have some bearing on the revenue available to the Main Highways Board. There had been in March of this year an increase of 773,598 gallons in the amount of motor spirit imported, compared with the figure for February, he said. The importation was 10,121,930 gallons, which was more than 2,000.000 gallons in excess of the figure for March of last year. Just on 102,000,000 gallons had been imported last financial year, which was nearly 25,000,000 gallons or 32 per cent, more than for the financial year 1945-46.
