EXPLOSION IN COLLIERY

NtitfE KILLED, 20 IN HOSPITAL LONDON, May 1. Nine men lost their lives in an explosion at the Barnsley colliery in Yorkshire to-day. Twenty men suffering from burns were taken to hospital. It is believed that the explosion was caused by the fusing of an electric cable. Fumes hampered the rescue work or four- teams, and toe last body was not recovered until four hours after the explosion. Because of the nation's need of coal, the Barnstey pit will be open as usual to-morrow instead ot following the traditional practice of closing down for a day of mourning.
