FERRY WHARF AT LYTTELTON
HARBOUR BOARD PLANS CHAIRMAN’S REPLY TO CRITICISM Provision for a thoroughly up-to-date steamer express wharf at Lyttelton has been made by the Lyttelton Harbour Board in its harbour improvement plan. This was announced by the chairman (Mr 8. Mac Gibbon) at the board’s meeting yesterday after correspondence about the steamer express wharf from the Union Stekm that a conference wotild .be held next week with representatives of me Railway Department and the-Unicm Steam Ship Companj to discuss the steamer eS ’ P ffim tas been leVeUed aMtast the board concerning the facilities *t the steamer express wharf,” said Mr Mac Gibbon. "The Soard ff fully aware that improvements have to be made, arid it has arranged a conference between the parties concerned. “But the board would like the publie io know that when the Hinemoa wks first coming out to New Zealand, the Union Steam Ship Company approached the board and Mked it to carry out certain improvements necessary to help with the discharge of all manner of cargo and of passengers Bdth from the Hinemoa and the Rangatita.. The board carried out in detail everything asked for by the Union Steam Ship Company, but it was only a few weeks ago that the company fouhd that the improvements that had been carried out were, not apparently adequate, and submitted a plan Which hag. inet with the approval of the board and its engineer, “Members of the board will all agree that we have to give facilities at the steamer express whdrf, but it is unfair to blame the board because further improvements have been found necessary, ’ Continued Mr Mat Gibbon. “The public knows that the bbard has very extensive harbour improvements under review, and several conferences have already taken place with shipping and othfer Interested pai tifeS With regard to these improvements. ‘ln these improvements a thoroughly up-to-date steamer express wharf will be provided. The present board has for some time been fully awarfe that major itnptoveirlehts must eventually be carried out.”
