FIRE DESTROYS RAIL-CAR
Driver Makes Quick Step NO PASSENGERS INJURED (P.A.) GREYMOUTH, May 8. The Greymouth - OhrieUhureh rail-ear wax deetreyed by fire at 7 p m. to-day, one and a hair miles from the Poerua station. The car was fully laden, but all the passengers eeoaped without injury. The driver, Mr C, Hardy, had no indication of the outbreak Until the flames had a firm hold, but was able to s|op the car and discharge the 50 paasengera. The malls were saved, but a small quantity ot passengers' luggage was damaged. • ... The fierce heat from hundreds of gallons of burning Diesel oil made it impossible to approach the car for some time, but it .was eventually pushed to Poerua station by the Grey-mouth-Otira goods train. At 10.55 p.m. the car was still burning. It was then a shell, and only the underframe remained. The line was undamaged, and normal traffic proceeded after the wreck had been removed. A special rail-car was put on from Greymouth, taking passengers for Christchurch. They will arrive about three hours late. The scene of the accident, between Poerua and Jacksons, is a very isolated locality.
