The fierce heat from hundreds of gallons of burning Diesel oil made it impossible to approach the car for some time, but it .was eventually pushed to Poerua station by the Grey-mouth-Otira goods train. At 10.55 p.m. the car was still burning. It was then a shell, and only the underframe remained. The line was undamaged, and normal traffic proceeded after the wreck had been removed.
