SOUTH POLAR REGION
SMALLER NATIONS’ INTERESTS
COMMENT BY BYRD (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10.45 p.m.) WASHINGTON, April 16. Rear-Admiral R. E. Byrd declared at a press conference that the smaller nations in the Southern Hemisphere with a direct interest in the South Polar region should have more to do with the Antarctic, and until they did he would not recommend United Nations’ control. Rear-Admiral Byrd said this after a correspondent referred to the interests of Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Chile in the Antarctic.
