RE-ZONING CRITICISED
AREA NEAR NORTHCOTE SETTLEMENT
A recommendation from the Metropolitan Town Planning Board that the land at the rear of the Northcote settlement be re-zoned as rural drew criticism from Cr. H. Kitson at a meeting last evening of the Waimairi County Council. Cr. Kitson said he objected to the depth of the green belt—three miles and a half—which the board wanted. It retarded the growth of the city into healthy building sites, in insisting that properties be limited to two acres, which was too large for the normal householder and too small for commercial gardening. In answer to a question by another councillor, Cr. Kitson said that the board had given np reasons for its proposed amendment. Evidently the board wished to prevent ribbon development, because it gave costly transport, sewerage and drainage. Slums were not wanted; but the board’s plans hampered healthy development. Other speakers supported Cr. Kitson. and it was decided to refer the question to the works committee.
