CANNED FISH FOR CHRISTCHURCH
ONLY SMALL SUPPLIES EXPECTED
Sardines and herrings in tomato sauce may be available in Christchurch grocers’ shops within a few weeks. Supplies of Canadian salmon are expected some months later. This canned fish is part of the allocation of 600 tons made to New Zealand for the year ending June 30. 1947, by the International Emergency Food Council in Washington. The quantity of canned fish available is small, and it is not expected that grocers will be able to give their customers more than one tin of sardines for each person. The quota ot salmon may not be one tin for each family. The licence under which imports are being made was granted lor 50 per cent, of the cost of such imports in 1938. Canned fish prices have trebled since 1938, and therefore only one-sixth of the quantity can be imported. Canada. Portugal, and Britain the sources from which the canned is expected.
