IMMIGRANT SHIP AT FREMANTLE

RACIAL BRAWLS DURING VOYAGE

PERTH, April 14. More than 50 migrants from the Middle East fought in the steerage saloon of the Egyptian ship Misr the night before she reached Fremantle. Passengers said that this was one of the many racial brawls which occurred during the voyage. Other allegations are that a migrant brandishing a table knife threatened a steward, that another migrant was bitten during a fight, that most of the migrants travelling in slum conditions in the steerage had no knowledge of personal or communal hygiene, that some of the migrants used the open deck as a toilet, that women passengers had to take showers on the decks behind thin canvas curtains, and that one passenger was believed to be insane.

The fares ranged from £175 for accommodation in six-berth cabins, to £l2O for bunks in the between deck dormitories. The immigrants, practically all of whom have relatives in Australia, include Greeks, Palestinians, Italians, Lebanese. Poles. Jugoslavs, Swiss, Egyptians, Germans, Rumanians, South Africans, Austrians, Hungarians, Czechs and Cypriots.
