AWARD FOR BRITISH WRITERS
SOMERSET MAUGHAM SETS UP TRUST FUND (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) LONDON, April 14. Mr Somerset Maugham has placed at the disposal of the Society of Authors, Playwrights, and Composers a trust fund sufficient to provide each year a prize of £5OO. which will be awarded to young British writers of outstanding promise. . The purpose of the award is to encourage young writers to travel and acquaint themselves with the manners and customs of foreign countries. Candidates for the award must be under 30 years of age and be British subjects by birth. The successful candidates must undertake to spend not less than three months outside Britain and devote the award to expenses of travel.
Mr Maqgham has asked the society to appoint judges, and the closing date for the first entries has been fixed as May 30, 1947. Entries may take the form of poetry, fiction, criticism, history, biography, belles lettres, or philosophy, but not dramatic work.
